It is your time to shine: traditionally almost all the wedding arrangements are made by the bride and her family. When it comes to the honeymoon, however, this is where the savvy groom can really show his mettle, demonstrate his understanding of not only the secret wishes of his bride-to-be but also of the world at large and all it has to offer. And where better to begin in a world of honeymoons than with The Islands of The Bahamas?
Where to stay
Aside from the most well-known islands of Nassau/Paradise Island and Grand Bahama Island there are more than a dozen little treats scattered around the chain that forms The Islands of The Bahamas and any one could be perfect for your honeymoon …
Enjoy the slow pace of Harbour Island and Hope Town on Abaco. Visitors to The Abacos usually take the ferry over to Nippers on Guana Cay for tasty well-cooked local food, musicians providing the atmosphere and a fantastic beach – all washed down with a Bahama Mama cocktail or a local Kalik or Sands beer.
Down on The Exumas you can take the water taxi over to Chat n’ Chill on Stocking Island where the food is fresh and the beaches are glorious. While Long Island offers some lovely resorts like Cape Santa Maria set on a cove of soft white sand. Or the bougainvillea covered Gems at Paradise offers individually decorated rooms and you can look out over the Atlantic Ocean as far as the eye can see.
Eleuthera is a another long narrow stretch of paradise just north of Long Island with resorts like Pineapple Fields and The Cove at Eleuthera set on the beach front.
The trade winds give The Bahamas a warm, agreeable climate all year round with temperatures ranging from the mid twenties to low thirties centigrade. Tropical rain showers tend to be short, sharp and refreshing, with most rain falling in June and higher humidity in the summer months. Winter months are the traditional peak times for visitors as the days are warm and nights a little cooler, although April to May and October to November can offer some great off-peak value.
After the adrenalin high of your wedding a Bahamian honeymoon offers not only the time to relax and savour the experience, but perhaps the time to share an adventure or two before settling down into wedded bliss. Learn to dive together in some of the clearest waters in the world is a thrill that can create a lifetime of holiday opportunities, or simply donning a snorkel mask unveils an ocean of marine life.
A kayak made for two will carry you along shallow mangrove creeks or above the bluest waters around the Out Islands, as they are known. A simple horse-drawn ‘surrey’ can take you sightseeing around the heart of Nassau or get mobile with a segway tour.
The choice of restaurants and bars is almost endless - from the simple local fish fry on every island, through to sophisticated Bahamian/international fusion cuisine in restaurants such as at Luciano’s and Café Matisse, right up to the celebrity chef menus at Nobu and Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Dune. And don’t miss the most extensive wine cellar in the Caribbean at Graycliff, where there is also a Cognac collection (the Cognateque), a chocolatiere, a fine cigar factory as well as a new pizza and beer garden to contrast all that high living.
British Airways operates a direct service five days a week and other transatlantic services connecting through the US hubs to Nassau and many of the Out Islands.
The major operators such as British Airways Holiday, Virgin Holidays and Kuoni feature a few of the Out Islands while the specialist operator Bahamas Flavour offers tailor-made holidays to any, or all of them.
