Shoes can often transform a look, taking it from the mundane to the sublime. A great pair of sneakers has the power to elevate jeans and a white T shirt to a fashion forward look while a great suit is infinitely smarter when you wear it with a new, smart pair of brogues. Men’s shoes tend not to change much season to season, however changes in weather do bring subtle differences that mean that some shoes are more appropriate than others. It may be a heat wave week, but we would recommend that you start to abandon the deck shoes for a pair of Chelsea boots.
With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the footwear that we think that you should be investing in this autumn.
The heavy duty shoe
One of the biggest shoe trends this winter is for chunkier, heavier footwear. You can see the appeal – great in a host of weather conditions and a great look when worn with slim silhouette trousers. We are big fans of when the chunk has been achieved via a rubberised sole. Case in point – these stunning Prada leather wingtop brogues, new this week to Mr Porter.
The Chelsea boot
The one boot that you need to invest in for the season is a Chelsea. Get the shape right and you can wear them with anything. They look especially good when donned under dark denim (we would recommend a great pair of Japanese selvedge jeans). Our Chelsea boot of choice has to be the dark brown RM Williams ones shown above.
The statement sneaker
If you are wearing sneakers this season (which you should be – in fact every season) make them statement. Plain white plimsolls are perfect for the summer when you are out in the park, at a festival or abroad but for winter we think you should be bold in your choice of footwear. Channel dark winter nights with these lovely navy and black Lanvin mid-top leather trainers at Matches Fashion.
The classic brogue
Some shoes do not ever go out of fashion or indeed stop being worn in seasons. The brogue is a great example. There are many reasons why it is still the classic men’s shoe and when you look at this Dr Martens black leather version at Topman you can see why.
Of course winter is all about cosy nights in and staying warm. So what do you need to do that? Apart from a better half, you need a great pair of slippers. We’ve been obsessing over these leather mule slippers at Marks & Spencer for some time now. Get them before they are all gone.
