JW Steakhouse London: The best halal steak in London?
Deep in the heart of the ever stylish Central London can be found a fantastic American eatery. It’s strange to enter a cavernous room and immediately feel like you’re in the US, especially when you’re on the very British Park Lane, but JW Steakhouse does not fail in its mission to bring authentic American cuisine straight to British mouths.
If you’re partaking in Ramadan this month and are looking for a large, juicy steak to break your fast, then JW Steakhouse is definitely for you. With its wonderfully accommodating service, the restaurant will order Halal meat if requested upon booking and 24 hours notice.
Diners can expect to be seated with a complimentary basket of bread rolls, dusted with a blend of herbs and spices and served warm – deliciously moreish.
The Tuna Tartar is a perfect way to start the meal; light, airy and wonderfully presented, the dish is quite satisfying, and is paired excellently with the avocado and lime dressing. We’d definitely recommend the JW Maryland Style Lump Crab Cake, which is cooked to perfection and crumbles symmetrically when cut into. The crab used is sweet and of very good quality, which is well complemented by the tangy tartar sauce it’s served with.
The menu boasts a varied “offering of tender hand-cut selections of American USDA prime beef” and the mains do not disappoint. The filet arrived with (somewhat randomly placed) grilled tomatoes; compact shaped and cooked exactly to my specification, the meat was succulent and tender. The flavours were understated and so, perfect for a side-order of garlic butter sauce. For choice of wine, this would paired well with a Merlot.
For those who prefer their steaks more flavoursome, the New York Strip is definitely the one to order. Served with a thick band of fat around the edge, it bursts with flavour and is incredibly juice. This can be paired with Penfold’s St Henri Shiraz.
The restaurant offers a variety of sides; the Potato Au Gratin is creamy and smooth but a little bland in comparison to the steaks. For thrill-seekers in search of something a little different, the Bourbon Sweet Potato Mash is intriguingly palatable. Its marshmallow crust sweetens it considerably and it almost feels like a dessert. For a traditional steak meal, we recommend sticking with the hand-cut maris piper chips, which are mouth-wateringly thick and steaming.
With the menu, the staff and even the walls (yes, literally the walls!) boasting “the best cheesecake this side of the pond,” we had to try it. A perfect end to the meal, the cheesecake has a smooth, creamy and intensely vanily interior, contained by a wall of buttery yet sweet biscuit crumbs. This melt in your mouth cheesecake is certainly one to try. It’s generally portioned so be sure to share!
JW Steakhouse have short list of mocktails for those who prefer non-alcoholic beverages. The Virgin Strawberry Mojito is delightfully refreshing and the perfect way to cool down on a hot summer’s evening. The Bourbon bar at JW Steakhouse offers the largest and most varied selection of Bourbons in London, so it’s highly recommended to order one of their Bourbon-based cocktails! For something cool and tasty, try the Signature Mint Julep which is a perfect balance of flavours.
Around £70 per person for 3-course meal and a glass of wine.
