Pinkie & signet rings – a sign of nobility
In recent times, this sign of nobility has been adopted by the fashion world as a statement accessory. A trend which is very much in line with the well-to-do gentleman, similar to how pocket squares and tie pins are now frequently worn by the modern chaps as style pieces designed to set us apart. The reborn appeal of the classy signet is going strong and shows no sign of fading.
Said to have originated in ancient Rome, signet rings were designed to depict an individual’s personality and could be worn only by those of a certain rank or status. The ring was used as a seal to represent its owner – almost like a signature. Men would wear it on the ‘pinkie’ finger of the left hand and stamp it on hot wax to sign documents and seal letters. Though they are no longer used in this way, many still wear them bearing their family crest or coat of arms. Even today, signet rings are still seen a symbol of wealth and status.
When comes to wearing the ring, certain qualities are said to be associated with each finger. The index finger represents leadership and ambition, while the middle finger channels a person’s sense of law and justice, and the ring finger aids the cultivation of love and creativity. The little or ‘pinkie’ finger (where the signet ring is traditionally worn) represents communication, intuition and intelligence.
